Born1948, Joseph started painting at a young age in Hong Kong, He experimented and developed his artisan techniques to depict his living surroundings. Between 1980 and 1982 he spent several months in Munich, Germany to learn etching techniques from printmaking workshops and print rooms. He taught etching classes in the Extramural Studies Department of Hong Kong Chinese University 1982-1987, and in the Fine Arts Department of University of Hong Kong as part time lecturer 1985-1989.
Joseph is observant and through his eyes, he transformed the vanishing Hong Kong countryside villages into oil paintings and etchings before his moving to Richmond BC, Canada in 1989. Joseph found new ground here for his works. Continuing his commitment to preserving heritage sites, Joseph used his work to catch a glimpse of Richmond BC's historical fishing village and local farms before the old images slipped away.
After a long trip to France in 2001, Joseph brought the vibrant colors of southern France to his paintings. Being inspired by the brilliant lavender and poppy fields, Joseph added bright tones to his paintings and etchings.
In 2008, Joseph revisited Hong Kong and he stayed once on an outlying island, and then in a small village by the sea too. The peacefulness of the village life is reflected in his works of that time.
After he returned to Richmond B C he started to paint with watercolour. Joseph has retired from his professional artisan work. He is now sharing his painting experience with his students and is continuing his painting for pleasure.
